A look into the expanding world of practical uses for Conduant’s StreamStor® and Big River solutions today and in the future.
Summary
Conduant’s StreamStor® technology bypasses the common bottlenecks inherent in computer systems, namely system memory, CPU and operating system. StreamStor® receives its stream via a hardware transfer directly from a data acquisition source across the PCI or FPDP Bus, and then records the data to IDE disk drives. This approach allows for sustained performance, making StreamStor® an ideal recording and playback solution for high-level applications that require reliable, error-free, high speed and/or long duration data streaming.
Primary Applications Today
Initially deployed to replace aging tape-based recording systems, StreamStor® is now an important part of the high-speed, long-duration recording space. In environments with large amounts of high-speed incoming raw data, StreamStor® excels at error-free recording and playback. The primary applications of StreamStor® today are:
- Scientific Research: high-energy physics, radio astronomy. See MIT Haystack Observatory case study
- Ultrafast Radar and Sonar Recording: missile tracking, reconnaissance, weather systems
- High Resolution Video Imaging and Surveillance: scientific, industrial, commercial
- Instrumentation Data Acquisition: vibration, pressure, digital signal processing
The Future
The application of Conduant’s breakthrough technology is expanding, by customer request, into diverse industries and disciplines such as:
- IT Backup: disaster recovery, disk-to-disk backup, disk copy
- Oil/Gas Exploration: seismic data recording
- HDTV: recording high-definition television directly to disk
- Large Scale, High Resolution Video Surveillance: airport security
- Video-On-Demand: storage and delivery
- WCDMA Recording: wireless area measurement
